Duquesne University M.S. Clinical Mental Health Counseling

(Mahmoud Yaku)
My name is Mahmoud Yaku. I’m at Duquesne University and their school
of education and I’m in their clinical mental health counseling program. I chose the CMH program at Duquesne for a
lot of reasons. The first one is the fact that the CMH program
is accredited through CACREP for people who don’t come from accredited schools. They have often times trouble finding jobs
or opportunities elsewhere so that gave me a sense of security the fact that it was accredited. The second reason is the fact that throughout
the application process the administrative staff and Dr. Jared Kolbert were very kind
and very accommodating. It built me, like, a sense of security, like
this is a good place to be. There are a lot of aspects of Duquesne University
that stand out to me as opposed to other programs. First and foremost, the faculty, they are
very, very strong and you can go to any professor and you can ask them questions about where
you might be, counseling, theories, like different populations you might want to work with, and
there is an answer for you within the faculty. They are very welcoming. They are willing to work with you on research. They are willing to meet with you on office
hours if you have problems in class. They are willing to talk to you about personal
issues if you have them. I think the faculty is extremely strong. The atmosphere of Duquesne is one that promotes
authenticity. Duquesne allows you to grow because it challenges
you. It’s a wonderful place to be if you want to
learn how to be a counselor. The clinical mental health program at Duquesne
is preparing me in a lot of ways for after graduation. The first way is the fact that every class
that we have is structured in a way to get you prepared for not only the CPCE, but also
the NCE. They allow you the opportunity to explore
different populations, experiment with your theories and your techniques in ways that,
by the end of the program, you will feel more comfortable, like, you will feel more confident. Duquesne gives you enough opportunities to
know about yourself and know who you are, not only as a counselor, but as a person. Duquesne provides the opportunity to know
what kind of counselor you want to be and I know I just want to be a good one, and I
wouldn’t really know all this if it wasn’t for Duquesne.
