Heart Attack Symptoms and Risk Factors – LewisGale Hospital Alleghany

– Heart disease in our country is the number one killer of adults. It accounts for approximately
six million ER visits every single year and of those ER visits, 1/3 end up to be truly cardiac in origin. There are really three typical symptoms of a heart attack. They include chest pressure in the middle of the chest. It often goes to the jaw, arm or shoulders and the classic symptoms
are worsened with exertion, and they’re improved with rest. So you have a patient who’s walking or moving up stairs, it gets worse and it gets better when
they sit down and rest. There are three groups of patients for whom the symptoms can be
not those same typical symptoms and those patients usually have what we call atypical symptoms and those are women, patients with diabetes and older patients. So true cardiac chest pain isn’t classic in those three groups and can include a multitude
of different symptoms including heart burn-like symptoms, indigestion, abdominal pain, weakness, nausea, vomiting, all those can be indicative
of a heart attack in those three groups. If you’ve had indigestion before, you know what it feels like, especially if you ate something spicy or some spaghetti or pizza and you have that same sensation, odds are that it’s probably indigestion but if someone had worsening symptoms of burning or the pain doesn’t go away with the same medications that they’ve taken before for indigestion and if these symptoms are new to you or at all unusual, come
to the emergency room. We’re always available for you. We have some very quick
and very good tests that we can perform. If it’s just indigestion, great, we’ve at least ruled out
life-threatening problems.
