How to start the conversation of mental illness

DURING MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH, WE ARE SHINING A LIGHT ON THE BEING NICE ACTION PLAN AND HOW IT HELPS TO TACKLE THE TOPIC OF MENTAL ILLNESS. LAST WEEK, WE TALKED ABOUT THE CHANGES YOU CAN NOTICE AND SOMEONE’S BEHAVIOR OUR PERSONALITY. NOW IT IS TIME TO ADDRESS THOSE CHANGES AND TALK TO SOMEONE IN A LOVING AND CARING WAY. HERE TO HELP NAVIGATE THROUGH THIS TOPIC IS JENNIFER FROM FOREST VIEW HOSPITAL AND CHRISTIE FROM THE MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION AND THE FOUNDER OF BE NICE. THANK YOU FOR JOINING ME. IT IS GOOD TO BE HERE. JORDAN: ACTUALLY TALKING TO SOMEONE ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH CAN BE VERY INTIMIDATING. IT IS AN IMPORTANT TOPIC THAT SOME PEOPLE NEED TO BRING AWARENESS TO AND KNOW ABOUT. CAN YOU TALK TO US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT, YOU STARTED LAST WEEK COMING ON THE SHOW TO TALK ABOUT NOTICING. YEAH. WHENEVER I HEAR A STORY OF SOMEONE WHO MAY HAVE DIED BY SUICIDE OR SOMEONE WHO IS STRUGGLING, SOMEONE ALWAYS SAYS, I NOTICED, I NOTICED THEY WERE ISOLATING THEMSELVES, AND I NOTICED THEY WERE DRINKING MORE. I NOTICED THEY WERE NOT COMING TO FAMILY FUNCTIONS. THE NEXT STEP IS IMPORTANT AND THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED, I NEED TO INVITE MYSELF TO LET THE PERSON KNOW WHAT I NOTICED. OFTEN TIMES, PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO START THE CONVERSATION, SO IT IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. STARTING THE CONVERSATION IS, I NOTICED AT THAT AND TELL THEM SPECIFICALLY WHAT YOU WILL ARE WORRIED ABOUT. — WHAT YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT. I NOTICED THAT YOU ARE DIFFERENT, YOU REALLY HAVE NOT SEEMED LI YOURSELF LATELY. ARE YOU FEELING OK? IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP? I HAVE NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE STOPPED. TELL THEM WHAT YOU HAVE NOTICED AND THEN, INVITE YOURSELF TO LET THEM KNOW WHERE THERE ARE REC — RESOURCES. JORDAN: SO IMPORTANT AND WE HAVE THAT INFORMATION. I NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN SAYING I, CAN YOU TELL US WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT START WITH I? BECAUSE I AM OWNING IT AND I AM LETTING THIS PERSON KNOW THAT ME, PERSONALLY, I HAVE NOTICED. AS OPPOSED TO, WE HAVE NOTICED, WHICH PUT SOMEONE ON THE DEFENSIVE. WHEN SOMEONE IS ALREADY STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS, A LOT OF IT IS WORTHLESSNESS, HOPELESSNESS, EVERYONE IS THINKING THESE THINGS ABOUT ME, THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT ME, SO WHEN I START A CONVERSATION, AND MIGHT SOUND REALLY SOCIAL WORK, BUT PUT IT BASIC TERMS. I HAVE NOTICED WHAT IS GOING ON. JORDAN: SO IMPORTANT. THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF THIS CONVERSATION, JENNIFER. FOREST VIEW HOSPITAL OF THE COLLABORATION WITH BE NICE IS SO IMPORTANT. CAN YOU TELL US WHY YOU JUMPED ON BOARD? BE NICE JUST OFFERED UP A WONRFUL TOOL FOR OUR COMMUNITY TO OPEN UP THE CONVERSATION ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS AND ABOUT THOSE CONCERNS. IT CAN BE VERY INTIMIDATING CREATE WITH — INTIMIDATING. WITH BE NICE, WE CAN OFFER THAN NICE, THERAPEUTIC, CALMING, COMPASSIONATE CONVERSATION THAT CAN GET THOSE THAT NEED TO TREATMENT THE TREATMENT, AND HELP BREAK DOWN THE STIGMA. OFTEN, STIGMA IS THE NUMBER ONE BARRIER TO GETTING HELP. JORDAN: TRUE. WE HAVE YOUR WEBSITE ON THE SCREEN AND IT SAYS, WE ARE HERE TO HELP FREE OF YOU HAVE SO MANY OPTIONS ARE PEOPLE WHO MAY BE STRUGGLING. THE TALK TO US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THOSE OPTIONS? WE HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF TREATNT OPTIONS AND WE HAVE A 24-HOUR, SEVEN DAY A WEEK ASSESSMENT AND REFERRAL CENTER. THAT MEANS ANYTIME OF DAY, ANY TIME OF NIGHT, ANY DAY OR NIGHT, YOU CAN SIT IN WITH OUR CLINICIANS AND TELL THEM, AND WE CAN HELP GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS OF FINDING THE RIGHT TREATMENT. THERE ARE DIFFERENT TO TREATMENT OPTIONS AT FOREST VIEW WHETHER IT IS INPATIENT HOSPITAL, SO SOMEONE IN CRISIS, THAT NEEDS THE INTENSIVE TREATMENT. WE HAVE A PARTIAL LEVEL OF THE CARE THAT IS LESS INTENSIVE FROM 9:00 A.M. TO 3:00 P.M. AND IT OFFERS PSYCHIATRY, SOCIAL WORKER, AND GROUP THERAPY. WE ALSO HAVE A MEDICATION MANAGEME CLINIC AT THE HOSPITAL FOR THOSE WHO ARE SEEKING ASSISTANCE WITH MEDS AND MEDICATION MANAGEMENT. WITH OUR ASSESSMENT AND REFERRAL CENTER, IF THOSE ARE NOT A GOOD FIT, WE HAVE A LOT OF REFERRAL SOURCES IN OUR COMMUNITY. JORDAN: DOING SUCH WONDERFUL THINGS IN OUR COMMUNITY. I DO WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THIS BEING PERSONAL FO ME MANY YEARS AGO. IT IS SO CRUCIAL TO SAY SOMETHING IN THE RIGHT WAY, AND — IN A COMPASSIONATE WAY. MY SISTER LOST HER BATTLE WITH A MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER. SHE HAD ANOREXIA AND BULIMIA, AND I DID NOTICE, AND I DID NOT SAY SOMETHING. A LOT OF TIMES IF YOU DID NOTICE SOMETHING, YOU DO NOT WANT SOMEONE TO BE MAD AT YOU, AND YOU DO NOT WANT TO POSSIBLY BE WRONG. IF I WOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING, COULD I HAVE SAVED HER LIFE, AND I THINK IT CAN SAVE A LIFE? I TRULY DO BELIEVE IT. TO BE NICE IT’S GOING TO SAVE SOMEONE, N IT IS BIGGER THAN THAT. IT IS AN ACTION PLAN. I’M GOING TO GO TO THE NEXT STEP AND I’M GOING TO INVITE MYSELF. I AM NOT GOING TO CAUSE THAT PERSON EMBARRASSMENT OR SHAME. I AM NOT GOING TO LOOK AT IT ANYWHERE ELSE AS IF I WAS CONCERNED WITH A HEALTH PROBLEM. PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THAT THEY ARE STRUGGLING INSIDE. IT DOES TAKE A LOVING, CARING CHALLENGE.ON AND IT IS A IT IS THE NEXT STEP IN THE ACTION PLAN. JORDAN: IT ALL STARTS WITH STOMPING OUT THE STIGMA. THAT IS A BIG EVENT. YES, AND I WANT TO THANK FOREST VIEW HOSPITAL WHICH IS SUCH A GREAT SPONSOR FOR US. MAY 18, ANOTHER WALK AND ANOTHER OPTION FOR PEOPLE TO GET INVOLVE WE KNOW THAT WHEN PEOPLE ARE GATHERED TOGETHER, IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE. FOLKS WILL BE THERE WHO POSSIBLY HAVE LOST SOMEONE TO A MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER, PEOPLE MIGHT BE THERE WHO ARE STRUGGLING THEMSELVES, AND MOST OF ALL, THEY ARE BELIEVERS AND THEY WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO STOP OUT THE STIGMA. IT IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH. IT IS BIGGER THAN THAT. IT IS A YEAR-LONG PROCESS. COME OUT AND JOIN US. TODAY, I AM ON MY WAY OUT TO HOLLAND FOR THE BE NICE VEHICLE IN THERE WITH CHILDREN. MAY 14, WE HAVE EMPOWERED WOMEN EVENT. YOGA. WE LOVE WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO RAISE MONEY FOR US, IT MAKES OUR JOBS , NOT EASIER, BUT IT PUTS IT OUT IN THE COMMUNITY. JORDAN: THANK YOU SO MUCH. POWER IN NUMBERS. THANK YOU FOR DOING WHAT YOU’RE DOING. DON’T GO AWAY, WE HAVE MORE AFTER THE SHORT BREAK. ♪
