Psychiatrist Warns Dr. Phil Guest About The Possible Risks Of Her Adderall Use

A lot of people have told me to leave Tamra but I had an ex-girlfriend who I very much cared for, she called me five years ago, she had an addiction issue. She said, “Steven come and get me.” And I’m like, “I can’t come get you, “I’m in a relationship.” I wish I had because she killed herself. I could have brought her and I could have tried to save her. I don’t want this to happen to Tamra. She doesn’t have anyone. Well Steve says despite people urging him to he will never turn his back on his wife despite her struggling with a dangerous Adderall addiction. (audience applause) And he shouldn’t and I’ll tell you why. She’s here, I mean she didn’t say, “No. I won’t come, I won’t listen to this.” She’s here, I mean you gotta give her credit for that. Now I want to introduce Dr. Charles Sophy. He’s sitting here in the audience. Now Dr. Sophy is a board certified psychiatrist in three clinical specialties actually, and he’s the medical director of the Department of Child and Family Services for Los Angeles. (audience applause) Dr. Sophy she’s taking 90 mg of Adderall a day. Never having had a brain work-up to determine if the pre-frontal cortex is in fact under active. What do you think about the levels of Adderall that she’s taking. Well I mean the top dose for an adult is about 40 mg a day, so you’re on 90. You’ve never really had you’re blood taken to see if your thyroid or any other medical problem could be presenting itself. But I think unfortunately you had a depression probably that this medicine, amphetamine, made you feel happy about, happier than you’ve been in awhile. But I think it goes back to his question of what were you running away from inside of you. Because it took it away but it’s artificial. And what do you think would be the potential problems with taking twice the maximum dosage that an adult should be taking of Adderall for not one, not two, not three but four years in a row. Well I mean the side effects of just your appetite suppression, you’re depriving your body of food probably of some level. Your sleep, your never restoring your brain to the level it should be, and your cardiovascular system can’t take it after awhile. That’s why your having those panic attacks, your being overrun with dopamine, your heart rate goes up, your blood pressure goes up, you could have a stroke. You could die. It tricks your body because you have pleasure centers in your brain and Adderall has a lot in common with cocaine. And you’re taking high doses of it and so it tricks your body and it messes up the neurotransmitters in your brain. You can have that energy, you can have that joy, you can have that creativity without putting your life at risk. Because right now you’re a drug addict and you’re a drug addict in a way that is risking your life. And you need to be responsible enough to hear that and make a deal that says, “I’m not willing to go back to where “I was before I started the drug, “but I’m not willing to put my life at risk “and continue doing this either, “I want an alternative.”

My normal true self was happy, just as happy and out going as Tamara on Adderall. When I became sick and disable I lost that side of me. I get what she wants and I want that part of me back too but adderall is s cheap and synthetic version of her.

  • Pondering Presbyterian

Dr. Sophy always has such a smug look on his face.

  • Monica de Bruyn Kops

Doctors that prescribe meds like the doctor did in this case should have their medical license revoked.

  • Reality Swapper

Keep in mind our government is perfectly fine with these legal methamphetamine derivatives being given to kids 4 and up…….Absolutely sickening.

These Pharma folks dont care what they do to families and kids. Long as there is profit and addiction involved.

  • Matt Firth

Wait hold back….so is this guy's attracted to addicts

  • therunaround

90 mg?!?! 😲 How is her heart handling that?

  • Leanne Cram.Smith

Im Australian. ..Ive never even heard of this drug or this guest..As far as I know its illegal over here for GP's to prescribe any stimulant based drug ,only a specialist can…we seem to also have restrictions on over the counter meds too…not sure how it works( or seemingly doesnt) in the US …but I could be wrong.
P.s 90mg prescription by her doc seems criminal and negligent

  • Ryan Kelly

The APA says the generally recommended maximum dosage that adults be prescribed is 60mg.
That being said, the key word is “recommended”, which indicates that clinicians must continue to take an individualized approach to treatment plans.
A person’s biochemical and immune response differ depending on many interrelated factors

  • Erin Flick

I take 90mg a day, however, it took more than 15 years to get me to this point. I started on 10mg 2x a day. I don’t run around the house playing dress up. I don’t speed around cleaning things (I wish I did!). By 10:30pm I’m ready to settle down for the night. It doesn’t affect my appetite (also wish it did!). It’s true when you really need the medication, you don’t experience the “fun” side effects. I admit I’m physically addicted & get sick within 48 hours of not taking it. I’ve had bloodwork done. I have never taken more than my prescribed dose because that would leave me short at the end of the month AND I’m a responsible adult. This woman makes people who need this medication look bad.

Yes, psychiatrist appointments are usually 15 minute med checks every 6-8 weeks. They are doctors. They care about how you feel, but not your feelings. I was in therapy for over 10 years, in addition to the medication. If you’re doing it right, you don’t just pop a pill, there’s more to it.

People don’t realize how mental health care works. A psychiatrist is a doctor who prescribed meds. A therapist, psychologist or counselor is needed to work out issues and to teach healthy coping mechanisms. They usually see patients more often and notice the changes. These 2 professionals rarely work together, but both are needed for full treatment. They don’t even communicate about an individual unless they are specifically asked to coordinate care.

  • Anne MacLeod

Dr Charles Sophy is clearly an extremely intelligent man, caring and compassionate. But he always comes across as smug, arrogant and self satisfied.

That's probably nothing like him but unfortunately he seems to come across in that way. He could take some lessons from Dr Phil in how to appear sympathetic and humble.

  • sweet spicy

His gf died , this woman going crazy ; what is wrong with this guy ?

  • Elady

I know this video is meant to deter Adderall usage… But now I'm thinking I need to start taking some Adderall. LOL.

All Adderall did for me was
    •made me anorexic
    •made me an addict
    •gave me panic attacks
    •gave me a sleep disorder
    •gave me straight A's
    •made me a robot

  • Christina Adeline Martinez

I am prescribed Adderall because I have ADHD I medically need it or I can’t focus on anything and my mind is out of control. I take hydroxizine and Citalopram for my anxiety disorder and my PTSD it is necessary that I have my meds and take them every night. I’ve never felt the urge to abuse my meds tho. The one thing I do struggle with though is taking them consistently every night. It’s a battle but I’m not a drug addict though.

  • Aubrey Wood

"Top dose for an adult is 40mg"
I was prescribed 70MG A DAY from the age of about 13-17. I was rail thin, felt psychotic, and now my depression at 22 is worse than it was when I was younger. Vyvanse/Adderall ruined my brain chemistry and I will forever begrudge the doctor that gave it to me, and my parents for shoving it down my throat.

  • globetrotter39

I have ADHD and anxiety. 20mg of Adderall along with my anxiety medication has made it possible for me to go to work and graduate college. It took me years to admit that I needed help, but I wouldn't go back now.

  • Amber Solaas

Adderall (amphetamine) has a lot in common with cocaine?
I thought it would be more like methamphetamine.

  • Sequoyah Hilderbrand

I was prescribed adderall for ADHD and at first it seemed to quiet my mind and allowed me to focus but it robbed me of my personality. Made me a lulled zombie. It’s crazy to see it fire someone up like this. It did the exact opposite to me.

  • Finn Bodkin

Can we appreciate how much of a legand this guy is.

  • Shane Berry

    She needs some good marijuana…

  • Francesca

I just wanted to let you know that Dr Charles Sophy is double-boarded in geriatric and general psychiatry, and also a children psychiatric expert. Dr Sophy is also the Medical Director for the Dept of Children and Family Services for the County of Los Angeles which is the biggest in the United States. In case you missed it.

  • Angel Alisa

If the maximum dose is 40 then why is this woman given twice the dose by the doctor? isn’t thats wrong?

  • Awkward Autistic

Vyvanse was a miracle for me…I can eat and sleep just fine. I have Asperger's…and no other med has helped. 90mg Adderall a day is way too much and she probably doesn't even have ADHD.

  • Allison Elizabeth

Steve, I know EXACTLY what you’re going through. My ex was a heroin addict whom killed himself and now I am married to a heroin survivor! It’s hard! Addiction is for life.

  • Ginger Gorilla

The problem I have with this is that for every person like her that abuses and subsequently demonizes Adderall, there are the thousands of people like me who have been saved because of it. Taking 30mg a day, while considered a bit high, is normal. Taking 2 to 3 times that is idioticly stupid, something that their psycharitrist that they have to physically visit every time they need to refill it, knows darn well to be the case

  • anabelleb99

This is so dangerous:( to do as a person with ADHD and I take Focalin for myself and do I can’t get high or anything and I never took Adderall but just poor lady

  • anabelleb99

I had a pull porblem too it’s hard

  • Kasual Beauty

the max reccomended dose of adderall is 40mg a day.

  • Sarah Mae Salazar

40 mg isn’t the maximum dose 🙄🙄🙄 Also when people who actually have ADHD take adderall, they don’t act like this. Quite the opposite actually. They’re usually focused and more mellow.

  • CorreaPlayz01 Nunya

Her husband seems like a good man. She is lucky

  • Dominique Works-Ortiz

The husband is a rockstar! He reminds me of my bf ❤

  • Rachel Ross

I’m 24 now. I’ve been prescribed the name brand or generic since I was in 7th grade when I was diagnosed with Asperger’s & ADD (Hyperactive). I currently take 40mg once in the morning every day & my insurance has had me taking name brand for the last 2 years. I was still in high school the last time my dosage changed & I’ve been out of there for over 6 years.

I say all of that to say that I don’t recall my doctor having told me of a risk of a stroke from prolonged use. The only side effect I ever get these days is loss of appetite & the occasional nausea if I didn’t sufficiently before it kicked in & I go for a long car ride. I’ve never understood the “high” that people get from the medicine I take every day. I don’t speed demon around the house or attempt to write an incoherent play in one night. When people abuse prescriptions that people actually need, they make it harder for those that legit need it to function/hold down a job/focus on one thing for more than just 2 minutes, especially when it’s something that they’re actually interested in. It’s not fair to make us jump through hoops, because junkies think it’s fun to abuse something that people need just to have a productive day. If you don’t need it, please, stop.

  • giselle joseph

I hope she stops takin it she will get a stroke

  • Breannan -

This is so sad to see. She’s so gorgeous and intelligent. I pray she comes down and at least sticks to being under the max amount a day. 🥺

I’ve put 120mg up my nose in about six hours and still didn’t act this shot. I have testimonials of non- high people to back up my claim. She’s completely shot and will die within a year if she keeps this up and have a heart attack. Praise God, but now I’m at almost four full years of sobriety.

  • Dirty Dan

I have ADHD! I have been on KETO & IF for 32 days.
My attention span, lack of focus, and motivation have always been a problem.
Personally, KETO hasn't helped to fix it nor has any natural alternatives.
I love adderall & it's the only remedy that works for me

Edit: I'm not an addict, there are times where I don't take adderall for months- only when I need it such as school

I am a service-connected disabled veteran (non-combat related; multiple training accidents in which I was almost killed). No need for me to go into the painful details. But I wanted to offer a counter-perspective on this medication. (I wrote a longer post but deleted it because it was too personal.) Just to name a few of my disorders: Cognitive Disorder (head injury), PTSD, and many other disorders and pain, nerve, anxiety, etc.

What I will say, though is, this medication has completely CHANGED my life for the better! I can concentrate; think clearly; see mistakes in my work. (I self-publish fiction novels.) But, I had the symptoms and NEEDED for this medication. I couldn't function. And we tried everything under the sun before I even thought about taking a drug like this. In fact, I was reluctant to do so because I used to teach. I worked with students from kindergarten to seniors in high school. Some of these kids were on these drugs that may not have needed them. Now, it's like a breath of fresh air! Within the context of concentration, I feel like I did before my head injuries.

Finally, this woman had a productive, successful life. And she had no injury or disorder to suggest she needed this medication. Anytime you take a medication you don't need can cause problems, you'll need other medicines to counter the side-effects of the drug. And it's a cycle.

I didn't have much time to edit this post this morning, so please forgive grammatical errors.)

    Much love

  • Watch Me Do

RIP his ex. Wishing them a sober future
