The Mental Discipline of Building Habits

The Mental Discipline of Building Habits

– You’ve been pursuing physical health as a primary a value in your
life for quite some time. – Mm-hmm. – How long has it been? – Seriously, probably
over the past five years, but I’ve been training
for close on 20 years. – So, what changed? I mean, what was the switch five years ago that caused you to take it up a level? – So when I was going year on year, and I see slight improvement
in my physical self, I thought there needs to be
something more that I could do, to really jump a level. And I’m seeing, especially with the introduction of social media, you see a lot of social
“stars”, or fitness people, and you see an example of
what people can achieve. Maybe I thought it could be achieved, maybe I thought it couldn’t, but I thought, “You know what, “let’s give it a go.” But I had no idea what to
do at that point in time. I just thought, well, I was training maybe two or three times a week. Maybe I thought, “Let’s train
three to four times a week.” And I did that for a couple of years, and again, I fell back into
the same patterns and behaviors that I had previously. What really triggered it
was the MAX challenge. When I got introduced
to the MAX challenge, which then I got introduced to Rowan, four times, five time Mr. Australia now, that’s when he incorporated
not only physical disciplines, but it’s the mental disciplines
that he incorporated, which was, “You need to train every day.” And it’s not about
whether you want to train, whether you don’t want to train, whether you do want to
train, just go and train. Because the discipline comes over time. Don’t think that you’re going to get to a certain shape or size because you’re going to
train seven days a week. Just go and train, and
you’ll see what happens. And then, what occurred was, because of that consistent effort of going to training every day, and pushing yourself, and
even through the times that you really didn’t want to train, mentally, you become stronger. Because physically, creates
the endorphin releases, you’re looking better,
you’re feeling better, and then mentally, you start to get stronger and stronger
and stronger and stronger, until it becomes just a habit. I think about I packed my bag. I came in this morning,
I wasn’t feeling great. Woke up, had poor sleep. But you know the first thing I did? Literally the first thing I did, I packed my gym bag. – Yeah yeah, absolutely,
it’s become an anchor now. – Exactly, and it feels weird, if I don’t walk out of the
house without a gym bag, I feel like something’s not– – There’s something missing. Something’s not right. – Yeah, and even being on holidays, the biggest change now
from even two years ago is I actually surround my holidays around where I can go to the gym. – Interesting. – If there’s no gym that I can attend, I start to wonder whether I
should go to a different place, because I need to make sure that that happens for me every day.
