UCTV News: Mental Health Action Day

Today, students are marching across campus in honor of Mental Health Action Day. They
are speaking to the Board Of Trustees in order to get their voices heard. At nine o’clock
on a Thursday morning, most students are getting ready for class, but today, dozens of activists
woke up early for another reason. Assembling at the UConn seal, more than 60 students gathered
to advocate for mental health initiatives at the Storrs campus. Luke Anderson:
So we have students struggling with racism and discrimination all across campus. Institutional
sexism, climate anxiety, financial burdens from crushing debt, all sorts of issues that
are exacerbated in recent times and are really weighing on students. Julia Dowd:
The protesters chanted popular slogans before marching to Wilbur Cross to petition the Board
Of Trustees during their monthly meeting. Speaker 3:

Mental health care is a- Julia Dowd:
The Collaborative Organizing Club asked for greater mental health services, availability
of staff and quality of service. Abhishek Gupta:
We have a responsibility to everybody on this campus to look out for their mental health. Julia Dowd:
The marchers said that lack of mental health services is a huge issue that needs to be
addressed. Abhishek Gupta:
At some point, the organizing has to stop and you have to take action. Right. Speaker 3:

In the past six months, there’s been a greater call for improved mental health services,
and the students say they’re not going anywhere until they see some change from Storrs, Connecticut
