Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing conference 2019

Well first of all I think it’s a good
moment to thank the UEA health and social care partners for organising today. It’s
a really important conference and for me that highlight has been actually hearing
from young people themselves. We’ve had young people on stage, we’ve had
videos from young people and they’ve been very very powerful messages and we
really need to listen to those messages and it’s a call to action but together
we can actually take on these challenges and we can provide solutions and put in
genuine actions. UEA health and social care partners is a brilliant initiative
and it’s exactly what is needed here we have a center of excellence and I think
it’s exactly what a university should be doing, working together with local
partners to drive change. It’s an incredibly powerful moment actually
because bringing so many people together from so many different organizations,
both to see the scale of the problem and to recognize that, but also to then build
a sense of ambition that together we can drive change, make change happen, and in a sense it’s a call to arms to say to people what we have at the moment is not
acceptable. There’s some huge challenges about young people’s mental health and
wellbeing we could only tackle those challenges by bringing together people
from all sorts of different sectors to think about the challenges and to come
up with imaginative, innovative and creative solutions that themselves are
embedded in research. For me, the power of the UEA health and social care partnership is that it provides a forum for which we can bring those people together and when we
do that you can genuinely be optimistic that we can come up with effective
solutions. Events like today are critical if you are going to solve the problem of young people’s mental health
defining what it is across all sectors be you in a school, or a voluntary sector or a parent, all of whom are represented here today is the only way we’re gonna
solve the problems and we’ve heard over and over again through the presentations
about how we all need to be working differently to start to address the need.
